For Teams
Given the success of the program, why were changes made?
FTC started as a demonstration event at the 2004 World Championship and quickly grew to over 800 teams in the 2007 season. In order to continue that growth it was decided that a platform that better reflected current technology now and into the future was required. The commercial partners who are supplying the new platform have the distribution channels and experience to allow FTC to scale globally over the next ten years.
What is the new FTC platform?
The new FTC Competition Kit consists of a controller, metal building kit, sensors, motors, and software. We chose PITSCO as the integrator of the components. They will distribute the new kit, on a discounted basis, to teams that register with FIRST. The FTC kits will not be available to teams that don’t register with FIRST. An education version of the FTC kit and associated curriculum will be offered to schools through PITSCO, separate from FIRST. A Bill of Materials list can be found here.
What does the new kit include?
The new kit will include everything teams need to compete in FTC including a complete metal set, controller, 11 motors, 10 sensors, gaming controllers, rechargeable batteries including chargers, and 3 software packages including classroom licenses. A Bill of Materials list can be found here.
Will the team structure change?
The team structure for FTC will continue to be the same as it has been in the 2007 season. Teams are allowed up to 10 members and the program continues to be targeted toward high school age students. Students participating on the teams must still be of high school age and cannot have already graduated.
When will registration open for the 2008 season?
FTC appreciates your patience while we make updates to our registration system. Please continue to check back for the 2008 season registration announcement.
Will the Showcase game from the World Championship be next year’s game?
The game used to unveil the new platform at this year's World Championship is not the game that FTC will using next season. The Showcase game was used to illustrate the new kit's capabilities in terms of motors, sensors, and design. The 2008 season game will continue to be a head-to-head competition using alliances and creative robot design.
What programming tools can be used with the new kit?
The new kit comes with software and classroom licenses for three programs: RobotC, NXT-G, and LabView. Teams may choose to use any of the three programs when designing their robot.
Will there be an event in my area this year?
Affiliate Partners are in the planning stages of their events. As dates are confirmed the FTC staff will post information on the www.usfirst.org website. Please continue to check back for further information.
When will the new season begin?
The 2008 season kickoff will be September 13, 2008. Please contact your Affiliate Partner for local kickoff event information.
What if I already have an NXT brain from an FLL kit?
FTC realizes that some FLL teams planning to move up into FTC may already have the NXT brain. A limited kit will be available for purchase for $800. Teams choosing to purchase the limited kits will not be eligible for Team Grants in the 2008 season.
I heard there were grants for returning teams. How does that work?
Teams that competed in the 2007 FTC season are automatically eligible for a $450 grant to be used towards the purchase of a new kit. When these teams register and pay for the 2008 season through the Team Information Management System, they will be provided a link to the vendor website to purchase a kit. The $450 will automatically be applied towards the purchase of a new kit.
What if my returning team wants to buy a second kit?
Teams may only purchase one kit per season. Additional hardware will be available at a later date.
Are there grants for rookie teams?
Need based rookie team grants are available. We encourage teams to contact their Affiliate Partners for more information and applications. If a new team is located in an area with no Affiliate Partner, please contact us at ftcteams@usfirst.org.
Can our team reuse the new kit from season to season?
Yes, the new kits can be reused. Teams are not expected to purchase new kits each year, though upgrades will be available in the future.
Can we use Vex parts with the new kit?
Vex metal parts may be used with the new kit. No Vex electronic parts will be allowed in the new season.
If I order a kit now, when will I receive it?
Kits will be available for purchase once the registration fee is paid in full. The new kits will ship until late August due to production time constraints.
Can I keep my team number from the 2007 season?
Teams that competed in the 2007 season will keep their team numbers.
